Trip Planning

If you only get to plan one winter trip to India and want the best possible odds on everything that makes winter worth travelling for, January is the month to build around. It's the coldest month across North India, the single strongest month for snow at nearly every Himalayan destination, and — a few hundred kilometres south — Kerala's backwaters are at their calm, comfortable best. It's also meaningfully quieter and cheaper than December, since the Christmas-New Year rush has passed.
This is one of four month-specific guides — see November, December and February for the rest of winter, or our Best Places to Visit in Winter in India hub for the full picture. January's identity is the "best odds, best value" one: the strongest version of nearly everything winter offers, without December's crowds and pricing.
Across nearly every Himalayan destination in our catalogue, January is the single strongest month for snow — the coldest average temperatures, the most accumulated snow cover, and, for skiing specifically, the best slope conditions at Auli and Gulmarg. It's also quieter and cheaper than the Christmas-New Year window, which makes it our default recommendation for any family whose travel dates are genuinely flexible. For the full honest breakdown of snow reliability by destination, see our snow destinations guide and our Shimla vs Manali vs Auli vs Gulmarg comparison. Our Shimla, Kufri & Chail and Manali packages, along with Auli and Gulmarg via our Kashmir itinerary, are all at their best this month.
While North India is at its coldest, Kerala is at one of its most comfortable stretches of the entire year — the monsoon is a distant memory, humidity is low, and the Alleppey backwaters are genuinely calm for a houseboat stay. January suits a Kerala trip as well as any winter month does. Our Enchanting Kerala Escapade, Kerala: Munnar, Thekkady & Alleppey and extended Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey & Kovalam itineraries are all well suited to a January trip.
January 26th, Republic Day, falls in the middle of this month and is widely observed with celebrations and the capital's parade — for travellers who'd rather be somewhere quieter and more personal than a city on a national holiday, it's a natural anchor for a short extra break either side of the date, whether that's a Himalayan snow trip or a Rajasthan or Kerala escape.
January's snow depth also makes it a strong month for an actual winter trek rather than a drive-up view — see our winter trek guide covering Chopta, Triund and Dayara Bugyal, all of which are in full snow-trekking condition by this point in the season.
Rajasthan and Gujarat both remain genuinely comfortable through January, without December's Christmas-New Year crowd crush. If you'd rather have Jaisalmer's dunes or Gir's forest trails without competing against peak-season demand, January is a noticeably easier month to book and travel in than December. See our Jaisalmer and Dwarka, Somnath & Gir packages.
