Trip Planning

February is winter's last call. By March, heat starts building fast across North India's plains and Rajasthan's desert, which makes February the final month to comfortably do a lot of what winter offers — without yet paying January or December's crowd and pricing premium at the destinations that do still have one. If your travel dates are flexible and value matters more than peak conditions, February deserves more attention than it usually gets.
This is one of four month-specific guides — see November, December and January for the rest of winter, or our Best Places to Visit in Winter in India hub for the full picture. February's identity is the shoulder-value one: most of winter's appeal, meaningfully less competition for it.
By February, snow at lower elevations — parts of Shimla town itself, Mussoorie — has often started thinning out, but higher-altitude destinations like Auli and Gulmarg typically continue holding good snow cover through the month, since their elevation keeps temperatures low enough for it to last. If skiing or guaranteed snow depth matters more to you than a specific date, February at Auli or Gulmarg is still a genuinely strong choice — see our Shimla vs Manali vs Auli vs Gulmarg comparison for the full elevation-by-elevation breakdown, and our Kashmir and Auli guides for trip planning.
February is genuinely the last month before Rajasthan's and Gujarat's daytime temperatures start climbing toward the point where desert camping and extended outdoor sightseeing stop being comfortable. It's also noticeably quieter than December and January, since the peak holiday season has passed. For travellers who want Jaisalmer's dunes, Udaipur's lake palaces or Gir's forest trails without competing against the season's busiest crowds, February is a strong, underrated choice. See our Jaisalmer, Udaipur & Mount Abu and Dwarka, Somnath & Gir packages.
Kerala remains pleasant through February, though humidity and temperatures both start climbing gradually as the month goes on, more noticeably toward its end. Earlier in February is the better window if you want the backwaters at their calmest before the shift toward Kerala's warmer months begins. Our Enchanting Kerala Escapade and Kerala: Munnar, Thekkady & Alleppey packages both still suit a February trip well.
Corbett's winter safari season, which began back in November, is still in full swing through February — cooler daytime temperatures continue to make for comfortable game drives, and it remains one of the more reliable months in the park's full season. Our Jim Corbett Wildlife Experience and Jim Corbett & Nainital packages both work well for a February safari trip.
Put simply: most of what makes November through January worth travelling for is still available in February, just without the Christmas-New Year crowd crush of December or the lingering peak-season pricing of January. If your dates are genuinely flexible and you're optimising for value rather than chasing the single most dramatic version of any one destination, February is, month for month, the strongest value pick of the entire winter.
| Destination | Why February Specifically | Package |
|---|---|---|
| Auli & Gulmarg | High-altitude snow still holds even as lower areas thaw | Kashmir — Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonmarg & Pahalgam |
| Jaisalmer & Udaipur | The last comfortable month before desert heat builds | Jaisalmer |
| Gir, Dwarka & Somnath | Comfortable safari and sightseeing conditions, quieter than peak season | Dwarka, Somnath & Gir |
| Jim Corbett | Late-season safaris, still within the comfortable window | Jim Corbett Wildlife Experience |
Is February a good time to visit India? Yes, particularly for value — most of winter's appeal is still available, without December's Christmas-New Year crowds or January's lingering peak pricing.
Is there still snow in India in February? Yes, at higher-altitude destinations like Auli and Gulmarg, which hold snow cover through the month even as lower elevations like parts of Shimla and Mussoorie start thinning out.
Is February too late for a Rajasthan trip? No — it's genuinely the last comfortable month before desert heat starts building toward March, and it's quieter than the December-January peak.
Is Kerala still good to visit in February? Mostly yes — Kerala stays comfortable through the month, though humidity and temperatures start climbing gradually, more noticeably toward the end of February, so earlier in the month is the better window.
Is Jim Corbett still good for safaris in February? Yes — the park's winter safari season remains in full swing, with cooler, comfortable game-drive temperatures continuing through the month.
Why is February considered the best-value winter month? Because most of winter's appeal — snow at higher altitudes, comfortable desert and wildlife conditions — is still available, but without the crowd and pricing premium of December or January.
