Thekkady, built around the Periyar Tiger Reserve, is where most Kerala itineraries add a wildlife and spice-country chapter between the tea gardens of Munnar and the backwaters of Alleppey. Here's what actually happens on a Thekkady visit and what to expect.
The centrepiece of a Thekkady visit is a boat ride on Periyar Lake, a reservoir formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam that now sits at the heart of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. Unlike a jeep safari, the Periyar boat ride lets you drift along the lake's edges where animals come down to drink — elephants, gaur (Indian bison), sambar deer and a wide range of birdlife are the most commonly sighted species from the boat.
On tigers specifically: Periyar is a designated tiger reserve, but Thekkady's tigers are notoriously elusive and genuine sightings from the lake boat are rare — most visitors come for the broader wildlife and forest experience rather than expecting a tiger encounter, and that's the honest framing worth going in with.
For a more active option, an off-road Jungle Border Jeep Safari is also available in parts of the reserve, offering a different vantage point than the boat.
Thekkady sits in Kerala's spice belt, and a visit to a working spice plantation is one of the more informative stops on this leg of the trip — cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, clove and vanilla are all grown in this region, and most plantation tours walk you through how each spice is cultivated and processed, often ending with a chance to buy direct from the source.
Thekkady is also a good place to see two of Kerala's signature performing arts in one evening: Kathakali, the elaborately costumed classical dance-drama known for its intricate facial makeup and expressive storytelling, and Kalaripayattu, one of the oldest martial art forms in the world, native to Kerala. Most shows include a short explainer on the makeup and training process beforehand, which makes the performance more accessible if you're unfamiliar with the art forms.
Kerala is closely associated with traditional Ayurvedic treatment, and Thekkady is a common place to try a short Ayurvedic massage session — worth booking in advance during peak season, since the better-regarded practitioners can fill up.
Winter (October to February) offers the most comfortable weather for the boat safari and outdoor spice plantation walks. The dry season just before monsoon (March-May) can actually improve wildlife sighting odds around the lake's edges, similar to other Indian wildlife reserves, as animals concentrate near remaining water sources — though it's also considerably hotter. Monsoon (June-September) brings the heaviest rain and can affect boat safari operations.
Thekkady features in our 5-day Munnar, Thekkady & Alleppey and 7-day Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey & Kovalam packages — see each page for the full day-by-day itinerary.
Will I see a tiger at Periyar Tiger Reserve? It's unlikely — Periyar's tigers are notoriously elusive, and most visitors come for the broader wildlife experience (elephants, bison, deer, birdlife) rather than a guaranteed tiger sighting.
What wildlife can actually be seen on the Periyar boat safari? Elephants, gaur (Indian bison), sambar deer and a wide range of birdlife are the most commonly sighted species from the lake boat.
What spices are grown around Thekkady? Cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, clove and vanilla are all cultivated in this region, and most spice plantation tours walk through the full cultivation and processing process.
Is Kathakali worth watching if I don't understand the story? Yes — most shows include a short pre-performance explainer on the makeup and training, which makes the elaborate dance-drama accessible even without prior knowledge.
What's the best time to visit Thekkady? October to February for the most comfortable weather; the hotter pre-monsoon months (March-May) can improve wildlife sighting odds near the lake but come with higher temperatures.
