The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the most photographed religious buildings in the world — gleaming white marble, reflective pools, and one of the largest hand-knotted carpets ever made, inside a structure that can hold tens of thousands of worshippers. It's also, genuinely, free to visit for anyone, regardless of faith — one of the more welcoming major religious sites open to tourists anywhere in the Gulf. Here's what to actually know before you go.
Reported hours conflict somewhat between sources, so confirm current timings before you travel. The most recent figures we found (from a September 2026 report) give general visiting hours of 9:00 AM to 8:30 PM, Saturday to Thursday, with Friday hours split: 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM, then 2:30 PM to 8:30 PM (the gap accommodates Friday prayers). An earlier 2026 visitor guide listed a different schedule — roughly 9 AM to 10 PM with Friday reopening at 4:30 PM — so treat the first figure as the more current reference, but confirm on the official site regardless.
On Fridays specifically, the main prayer hall is closed to tourists from midday to 3:00 PM, since this is an active place of worship, not a museum.
Genuinely free — there's no admission charge to enter the mosque grounds or the main building itself. This is worth highlighting, since quite a few major landmarks in the region charge significant entry fees; the mosque is a notable, welcome exception.
This is strictly enforced, and visitors who don't comply will not be admitted:
- Women need to cover their hair with a headscarf and wear loose, non-transparent clothing covering their arms and legs. - Men need long trousers and a shirt that covers the shoulders — no shorts, no sleeveless tops. - Free abayas (for women) and kanduras (for men) are reportedly provided at the entrance for visitors who arrive without appropriate clothing, so you aren't necessarily required to buy anything in advance.
One practical warning worth passing on: at least one visitor reported being charged a surprisingly high amount (around 1,000 AED) at a shop near the mosque for "covering" clothing, before successfully disputing the charge. Use the mosque's own free provision if you need it, rather than a nearby shop pushing a paid alternative.
Generally permitted in the public areas and courtyards, which is where most of the famous photos (the reflecting pools, the floral marble inlay, the grand archways) are taken. Visitors are not permitted to pray inside the main prayer hall as tourists — that space is reserved for worship.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the most commonly included stops on an Abu Dhabi day tour from Dubai, alongside other city landmarks. Our Dubai & Abu Dhabi tour package includes a full-day guided Abu Dhabi city tour with the BAPS Hindu Mandir confirmed as part of the itinerary; many Abu Dhabi city tours include the Grand Mosque as well, though it isn't separately named in our current package description — mention it specifically when you enquire, so your guide can confirm it's built into your day rather than assuming it's automatic.
Is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque free to visit? Yes — entry to the grounds and the main building is free for everyone, regardless of faith.
What are the visiting hours? Reportedly 9:00 AM-8:30 PM Saturday-Thursday, with Friday split into 9:00-11:30 AM and 2:30-8:30 PM. Confirm current hours on the official site, since sources differ.
What's the dress code? Strictly enforced — women need a headscarf and loose clothing covering arms and legs; men need long trousers and a covered-shoulder shirt. Free abayas and kanduras are provided at the entrance if needed.
Is the mosque closed at any point on Fridays? Yes — the main prayer hall is closed to tourists from midday to 3:00 PM on Fridays for prayers.
Can I take photos inside the mosque? Generally permitted in public areas and courtyards. Tourists are not permitted to pray inside the main prayer hall.
Should I buy cover-up clothing from shops near the mosque? Not necessary — the mosque itself reportedly provides free abayas and kanduras at the entrance. At least one visitor reported being overcharged at a nearby shop, so use the mosque's own provision instead.
