The Pin Bhaba Pass trek is one of Himachal's classic crossover treks, taking you from the lush Bhaba Valley near Kafnu, over a high pass, and down into the stark, high-altitude landscape of Spiti's Pin Valley.
The route The trek typically starts at Kafnu in the Bhaba Valley, following the Bhaba River up through alpine meadows and campsites before the pass crossing itself, then descends into Pin Valley near Mudh village — a genuine landscape transformation from green valley to cold desert over the course of the trek.
Difficulty level Pin Bhaba Pass sits at roughly 4,900 metres and is generally rated moderate to difficult — the approach days are manageable, but summit day (crossing the pass) is a long, high-altitude push that demands reasonable fitness and prior trekking experience, ideally including at least one previous high-altitude trek.
Best time to trek July to September is the standard window, once winter snow has cleared from the pass but before early-season snowfall returns — exact opening dates vary year to year, so confirm current trail conditions before finalising your trip.
What to pack Proper high-altitude trekking gear — a good sleeping bag rated for sub-zero temperatures, layered thermal wear, trekking poles for the pass descent, and broken-in trekking boots are all non-negotiable here given the altitude and terrain.
