Khajjiar is a small saucer-shaped meadow in Himachal's Chamba district, ringed by dense deodar forest and backed by distant snow peaks — genuinely pretty, and genuinely famous for a nickname that gets repeated on nearly every India travel list: "the Mini Switzerland of India." The story behind that name is more specific than most people realise, and worth knowing before you go.
In 1992, a Swiss diplomat named Willy Blazer visited Khajjiar and was struck by how much the meadow reminded him of Switzerland's own alpine scenery. He had a board erected at the site marking the distance from Khajjiar to the Swiss town of Bern — reportedly around 6,194 km. That marker is still there today, and it's the actual origin of a nickname that's since been applied (arguably over-applied) to several other scenic spots across India. Whether the comparison genuinely holds depends on your expectations: Khajjiar is a lovely, compact meadow-forest-lake combination, not a literal recreation of the Alps — go for what it actually is, not for a literal Switzerland substitute.
Reported distances vary depending on the exact route and starting point within Dalhousie — figures we've seen range from roughly 15 km to 24-26 km, commonly cited as a 45 minute to 1 hour drive. Nearby Dainkund Peak, the highest point in the Dalhousie area, sits about 17 km from Khajjiar and is often combined with the same outing.
Khajjiar has no airport or railway station of its own. The nearest railhead is Pathankot, roughly 80 km away, and the nearest airport is Kangra (Gaggal) Airport, about 120 km away — most visitors reach Khajjiar by road via Dalhousie or Chamba, as part of a wider Himachal circuit rather than a standalone destination trip.
- The meadow and lake itself — a small lake sits at the centre of the grassy expanse, with grazing cattle and horses adding to the pastoral scene; simply walking or sitting here is the core appeal. - Horse riding across the meadow — a popular, low-effort way to take in the scenery. - Zorbing — rolling downhill inside a large inflatable ball, one of Khajjiar's more distinctive adventure activities. - Paragliding, weather and operator availability permitting. - Khajji Nag Temple, a 12th-century wooden temple on the meadow's edge, worth a short visit for its age and architecture alone. - Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, nearby, offering forest walks and a different, denser-forest character than the open meadow.
Advice varies somewhat by source, but the broad pattern holds: spring (March-June) for green meadows and comfortable temperatures, and autumn (September-November) for clear skies and fewer crowds; some guides also recommend December-February specifically for snow cover, if that's the look you're after. The July-to-mid-September monsoon is best avoided given the region's landslide risk on mountain roads.
Our Himachal Pradesh circuit — Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala & Dalhousie includes a dedicated Khajjiar morning excursion on Day 7, on the way from Dalhousie toward Amritsar — so this isn't something you need to arrange separately if you're travelling with us on that circuit.
