Destination Guides

Dawki, a small town on Meghalaya's border with Bangladesh, has become one of North-East India's most photographed destinations for one specific reason: the Umngot River that runs through it, where boats appear to float on glass rather than water. It's a real and striking sight — though it's worth knowing upfront that "India's clearest river" is marketing language rather than a verified scientific ranking, and that the river's clarity genuinely depends on when you visit.
Dawki is roughly 82-96km from Shillong, commonly a 2.5-3 hour drive — figures vary slightly by source and exact route. It's a manageable day trip from Shillong, though many travellers combine it with a stop at nearby Mawlynnong (often promoted as "Asia's cleanest village") given how close the two are to each other.
The Umngot's water really is remarkably transparent in the right season — river-bed stones and fish are visible from a boat on the surface, which is genuinely unusual and photogenic. That said, "India's clearest river" is a popular marketing phrase rather than an independently verified title, and clarity varies substantially by season (see below). Visit expecting a genuinely beautiful, unusually clear river — not necessarily a scientifically "clearest in the country" guarantee.
Winter (November to February) is consistently cited as the best window for the clearest water, when the river runs low and still after the monsoon has passed. Avoid the monsoon months (June-September) specifically — heavy rain churns the river and clarity drops noticeably, which can mean a very different (and less impressive) experience than the photos that drew you there in the first place.
- Boat rides on the Umngot are the main draw — small boats take you out over the clear water, often as far as the India-Bangladesh border area nearby. - The Dawki Bridge itself offers good photo vantage points over the river. - Combine with Mawlynnong village and the nearby living root bridges the Khasi Hills region is known for, all within a reasonable drive of each other.
- Boat ride pricing is typically negotiated locally and can vary by season and boat size — confirm rates with boat operators on arrival rather than assuming a fixed published rate. - Dawki sits right at the India-Bangladesh border; carry ID and be mindful of restricted zones near the actual border line. - As with much of Meghalaya, weather can shift quickly — check conditions before committing to a full day trip from Shillong.
