Destination Guides

Five days is genuinely the right length for a first Almaty trip — enough to cover the city properly, spend a full day in the mountains at Shymbulak, and commit a full day to one serious nature excursion, without the rushed feeling that comes from trying to fit in everything Kazakhstan's Almaty region has to offer. This guide breaks that trip down day by day, with realistic timings, logistics and a sense of what each day actually costs — building on our complete Kazakhstan travel guide, which covers the destination more broadly.
This plan assumes you're flying into Almaty, staying centrally (most hotels suited to tourists sit within easy reach of the Old Square/Panfilov Park area), and prioritising one nature excursion over trying to combine two in a single trip. If you have 6-7 days instead of 5, see the alternative itinerary in our main Kazakhstan guide, which spreads Charyn Canyon and an overnight Kolsai/Kaindy excursion across more days rather than compressing them.
Morning/Afternoon: Most international flights land at Almaty International Airport by midday or afternoon. Clear immigration, meet your transfer, and check in — the drive into central Almaty typically takes 30-45 minutes depending on traffic and your hotel's location.
Evening: Keep this light. A walk through the Old Square area or a central shopping street helps with the time-zone adjustment without committing to a full sightseeing block on a travel day. Dinner at a local restaurant — this is a good first chance to try beshbarmak or manty if you're keen to start on the food early.
Practical note: Don't schedule anything time-sensitive (a specific cable car slot, a tour pickup) for Day 1 evening — flight delays and immigration queues are common enough that a buffer matters.
Morning: Start with Panfilov Park and Zenkov Cathedral — the wooden cathedral's colourful domes photograph best in clear morning light, and the park itself is a pleasant, unhurried start to the day. Budget 1-1.5 hours here.
Midday: Head to the Green Bazaar for lunch and a look at local produce, dried fruits and street food — genuinely worth the detour, though check current opening hours before building your morning around it, since bazaar hours can shift.
Afternoon: Republic Square for a shorter stop (20-30 minutes is usually enough unless there's a specific exhibition or event), then make your way toward Kok-Tobe Hill.
Evening: Take the cable car up to Kok-Tobe for sunset — this is the best single viewpoint over the city, with cafés at the top if you'd rather sit and watch the light change than keep moving. Budget 1.5-2 hours for the full Kok-Tobe visit including the ride up and down.
Pace check: This is a full day but not a rushed one — if you're moving slowly, drop Republic Square rather than compressing the cathedral or Kok-Tobe visits, both of which are worth lingering at.
Morning: Head out early — a private transfer or taxi to Medeu takes roughly 20-30 minutes from central Almaty. Spend 30-45 minutes at Medeu's skating rink, taking in the dramatic mountain-bowl setting even if you're not skating.
Midday: Take the cable car up to Shymbulak — the ride itself is a genuine highlight, climbing through alpine scenery to around 3,200m. In winter, this is where your skiing or snowboarding day happens (see our dedicated Shymbulak snow guide for a full first-timer's breakdown); outside the snow season, budget 2-3 hours for the views, a café stop, and a short walk near the upper station.
Afternoon: Return to Almaty by mid-to-late afternoon, with the rest of the day free — this is a naturally lighter day than Day 2 or Day 4, which suits recovering from altitude or simply resting before tomorrow's longer excursion.
Practical note: Confirm cable car operating hours and any weather-related closures the morning of your visit — mountain conditions can shift independently of what the city weather looks like.
This is the day that defines your 5-day trip's character, and it's worth choosing deliberately rather than defaulting to whichever sounds more familiar.
If you choose Charyn Canyon: Departure by 7-8am is sensible given the roughly 200km/3-4 hour drive each way. At the canyon, the main Valley of Castles trail runs about 2km one-way along the canyon floor to the Charyn River, typically 1.5-3 hours round trip depending on your pace and how many photo stops you take. Factor in the descent from the parking area (30-45 minutes) separately. You'll be back in Almaty by evening, tired but having covered genuinely dramatic terrain in a single (long) day.
If you choose the Kolsai Lakes: This is a bigger commitment — Saty village, the gateway to Kolsai, sits roughly 300km/5-6 hours from Almaty each way. A single-day round trip is possible but genuinely long (expect a very early departure and a late return); if your schedule allows even a slight extension, an overnight stay near Saty turns this into a far more relaxed two-day experience rather than a one-day endurance test. At the lake itself, the walk from the parking area to Lake 1's shore is a manageable 1-2km; reaching Lake 2 adds a serious 4.5-8km trek (sources vary) with real elevation gain — plan for Lake 1 only unless you're committing to the longer hike.
Our honest take: Charyn Canyon is the more realistic single-day choice for a 5-day Almaty trip; Kolsai is better suited to the 6-7 day alternative itinerary in our main guide, where it gets the overnight stay it deserves. See our Charyn Canyon vs Kolsai Lakes comparison for a full side-by-side if you're still deciding.
Morning: A genuinely relaxed breakfast — this is the one day on this itinerary without a packed schedule. If your flight isn't until the evening, a last visit to a central shopping street or café, or a return to anywhere you wanted more time on Day 2, fits well here.
Afternoon: Transfer to the airport, allowing the same 30-45 minute buffer as your arrival transfer, plus standard international check-in time.
These are illustrative per-person planning figures for a mid-range trip, assuming two travellers sharing — see our full Kazakhstan trip cost breakdown for budget and premium tiers and the assumptions behind these figures.
| Day | Focus | Approximate Daily Spend (excl. accommodation) |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrival, light evening | ₹2,500-4,000 |
| Day 2 | Full city day | ₹3,500-5,500 |
| Day 3 | Shymbulak/Medeu | ₹4,000-7,000 (more if skiing) |
| Day 4 | Charyn Canyon excursion | ₹5,500-9,000 |
| Day 5 | Leisure & departure | ₹1,500-2,500 |
A mix of city and mountain days means genuinely layered packing: comfortable walking shoes for the city days and the canyon trail specifically, a warm layer for Shymbulak's altitude even outside winter, sun protection (mountain sun is stronger than it looks), and — if you're travelling December-February — proper winter gear for Day 3 regardless of whether you plan to ski. See our Kazakhstan snow trip guide for a full winter packing list if snow is part of your plan.
Is 5 days enough for Almaty? Yes, for the city plus Shymbulak plus one nature excursion (we'd recommend Charyn Canyon over Kolsai for a 5-day trip specifically, given the distances involved). Extend to 6-7 days if you want both Charyn and an overnight Kolsai/Kaindy excursion.
Should I do Charyn Canyon or Kolsai Lakes on a 5-day trip? Charyn Canyon, generally — at roughly 200km/3-4 hours each way it's a manageable single-day round trip, while Kolsai's 300km/5-6 hour distance each way makes a single-day visit genuinely exhausting.
How much walking does this itinerary involve? A moderate amount — Day 2's city sightseeing involves standing and walking rather than serious hiking, Day 3 is mostly cable car and viewpoint time, and Day 4's Charyn Canyon trail is about 2km one-way on a clear path, manageable for most fitness levels.
Can this itinerary be adjusted for winter travel? Yes — Day 3 becomes a full skiing or snowboarding day at Shymbulak rather than a scenic visit, and Day 4's nature excursion may need rescheduling or skipping depending on road conditions, since Charyn Canyon and the mountain roads can be affected by winter weather.
Do I need a private vehicle for this itinerary? For Day 4 specifically, yes — public transport doesn't practically cover Charyn Canyon or Kolsai. Days 1-3 are workable with taxis/ride-hailing within the city and to Medeu.
Our Almaty, Kazakhstan package follows a similar 5-day/4-night structure — city sightseeing, Shymbulak via Medeu, and a nature excursion — with private vehicle transport, airport transfers and entrance tickets built in. If you'd rather adjust the pace, swap Charyn Canyon for Kolsai, or extend toward a 6-7 day trip, share your preferences and we'll build it around you.
