Sikkim & Gangtok: A First-Timer's North East Circuit Guide

Sikkim is one of India's most rewarding but least-explored mountain states, and a first trip here needs slightly different planning than a standard Himachal or Uttarakhand getaway.

Permits for Indian and foreign nationals Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit for parts of North Sikkim and areas near the international border, obtainable online or on arrival in Gangtok with a valid photo ID. Foreign nationals face additional restricted-area permit requirements and generally need to arrange travel through a registered agent — rules here have changed periodically, so always confirm current requirements before booking.

The Gangtok–Lachung–Nathula circuit A typical first circuit covers Gangtok (MG Marg, monasteries and the Ganesh Tok viewpoint), a drive up to Lachung and the Yumthang Valley (often called the "Valley of Flowers of Sikkim" for its rhododendron blooms), and a day trip to Nathula Pass on the India–China border, permit and weather permitting.

Best season March–May brings rhododendron blooms and clear mountain views; October–December offers crisp, clear weather for the Kanchenjunga range, though Nathula can close on short notice for weather or security reasons in any season.

Pairing with Darjeeling Bagdogra airport serves both regions, so many first-time visitors combine a Sikkim circuit with a few days in Darjeeling for its tea gardens and toy train — worth building in if you're already making the journey out to the North East.
