Chopta, often called the "Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand," changes character dramatically across the year — which season suits you depends on whether you're chasing green meadows, snow, or a specific trek condition.
Summer (April–June) This is Chopta's most popular window and for good reason — the Tungnath trek and Chandrashila summit climb are at their most accessible, with clear trails and good visibility for the Himalayan panorama from the top. Wildflowers start appearing across the meadows by late May.
Monsoon (July–September) Chopta turns intensely green in monsoon, but trails get slippery and leech-prone, and visibility on the Chandrashila summit is unreliable — worth avoiding if the sunrise view is your main goal, though the lush landscape has its own appeal for travellers less focused on trekking.
Autumn (October–November) A genuinely excellent window — clear skies, comfortable trekking temperatures, and some of the year's best visibility for the Chandrashila panorama, without monsoon's mud or peak-summer crowds.
Winter (December–February) Chopta becomes a snow-trekking destination in winter, with the Tungnath trail transforming into a proper snow trek — a completely different, quieter experience from summer, though it demands more preparation and appropriate winter trekking gear.
Our recommendation For a first visit balancing trail conditions, views and moderate crowds, May–June or October are the strongest picks. Our Chopta | Tungnath package includes the Tungnath temple and Chandrashila peak trek alongside Deoria Tal and Neelkanth Mahadev, running in the summer season — see the package page for the current itinerary.
